Puppy Mills

Backyard breeders and puppy mills are typically a family or individual who breeds puppies as a revenue stream for their family.  A backyard breeder may be very nice and have good intentions but sadly they lack in proper breeding practices, hygiene and care. Many backyard breeders breed a family pet every six months or a year to someone else’s family pet and produce a few litters a year.  Many young puppies at shelters are spayed or neutered at extremely early ages, even before 12 weeks of age, because of the potential for some opportunist to grab a puppy that should not be bred, in order to breed it.
