Dog Possessiveness

Have each member of the family rub his or her hands on a dry paper towel, which will enable you to gather all the smells of whatever and whomever you touched and your own smells.  These will then transfer to items the dog might consider his own.  Then place it, along with those of others in your family, into a zippered storage bag so all those smells will intermingle. This symbolizes all the smells of the family members, or pack members.

Place one of the paper towels into the bag of dog food and the kibble will then pick up the smells of the family members.

Rub another family scented paper towel on the bed or any toys you purchase so that the dog will smell the humans’ smells and this will further enforce the idea that he does not own anything.  Dogs who believe they own something also believe that they can protect it.  The less your dog thinks this, the happier he will be.

Imagine if you didn’t have to work because you were not responsible for your mortgage. Or your rent. Or your expenses. What a Wonderful Life it would be!
