A worry-free visit to the Vet

Here are some tips for a worry-free visit to the vet:

  • Visit the vet office before the initial medical visit in order to get your dog familiar to the space.  These visits should be happy and short, ending on a good note
  • Ask your veterinarian which hours tend to have the fewest pets in the lobby, and go at that time
  • Do not use a retractable lead leash at the vet’s off as they are difficult to manage.  Your dog should be near you at all times, and not wondering around
  • Even if your dog is a happy camper other dogs may be aggressive so stay alert
  • Be respectful of other pet owners
  • When you are nervous, anxious or fearful, your dog will pick up immediately on your energy and may begin to act differently.   Stay calm and relaxed and your dog will pick up on your confident attitude
  • Do not worry if the vet tech or veterinarian asks to take your dog into “the back”.  It is often easier for the dog if you are not there to make him nervous and edgy
