You may have been referred to see a vet oncologist by your regular veterinarian if they are concerned that your pet may have cancer, or if your pet has already been diagnosed with cancer. At the initial consultation, the Oncologist will review your pet’s prior records and any testing that has already been done. They will take a thorough history from you and perform a physical examination. After which, the Oncologist will then proceed to tell you about the type of cancer your pet has or is thought to have, to include the biologic behavior, treatment options (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy) and various prognoses.
Sometimes further testing will be recommended in an attempt to assess the full extent of the disease and also to help dictate which treatment options are best. Ultimately, it is your decision if you choose to go forward with further tests or treatments. The oncologist and their staff will help you with these decisions. As always, the Oncologist should be in close contact with our regular veterinarian and work collaboratively with regards to your pet.
